William Eldridge was recorded at the Finsbury district of Central London, England in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census. In 1851 he was shown as being born in New York and in 1861 in America. Baptism records for his nine children at St Giles in the Fields, Middlesex from 1820 to 1844 mostly show he was a chimney sweeper as do the marriage records for his daughters Mary Ann and Martha.
Birth registration records for his children Thomas William and Joseph both show their mother as Elizabeth Eldridge formerly Hill suggesting they were the William Eldridge and Elizabeth Hill who married on 23 Jun 1823 at St Anne, Westminster in Middlesex.
Their daughter Martha married Charles Large on 3 Sep 1853 at Barming in Kent and they migrated to New Zealand on the Waipa departing 17 Dec 1877 together with their children Charles, Elizabeth, Mary A, Henry, Martha and Alfred. Their son William had travelled to New Zealand the previous year on the Atrate
